ESP RainMaker Neo

An open-source device-to-cloud-to-app IoT platform from Espressif Systems. Build connected products on ESP32 SoCs with a device SDK, a serverless cloud backend, phone apps and a web dashboard, all running in your own AWS account.

What ESP RainMaker Neo is

ESP RainMaker Neo is an open-source IoT platform for building connected products around Espressif devices. It ships the cloud backend, the device firmware SDK, a phone application SDK with reference apps, and a web dashboard, so a product team can go from an ESP32 board to a shipping connected device without building the infrastructure in between.

The backend is built on AWS serverless services and is deployed into your own AWS account, which keeps the infrastructure, the device data and the access policies under your control. Optional paid enterprise modules add enterprise-grade management, security, analytics and support on top of the open-source platform.

ESP RainMaker Classic is the existing ESP RainMaker implementation already used in mass production by many customers, and Espressif continues to support and maintain it. ESP RainMaker Neo is the new open-source implementation intended for new projects; existing customers do not need to migrate.

Platform components

Each part of the platform is documented and can be adopted on its own.

Cloud Backend

Serverless AWS backend with REST APIs, deployed and operated in your own AWS account.

Firmware

Device SDK for ESP-IDF: device credentials, network provisioning, OTA updates and the path to production.

Phone Apps

Use the ESP RainMaker Home app with a Neo backend, brand your own app, or build one with the app SDK.

Dashboard

Web console for a deployment: register nodes, group them, roll out firmware and manage settings.

Key features

Your AWS account

The whole deployment lives in your account, so you own the data, the cost model and the access policies.

Serverless and pay as you go

Built on AWS IoT Core, Lambda and DynamoDB, scaling with the size of the fleet rather than a fixed server footprint.

Provisioning and onboarding

Wi-Fi and Thread provisioning with QR-code onboarding, backed by per-device credentials.

Over-the-air updates

Firmware images, jobs and rollout controls for staged updates across a fleet.

Automation

Groups, scenes and schedules for organising devices and running them without an app in the loop.

User management

Accounts, sharing, roles and administrative APIs for multi-user and multi-tenant products.

REST APIs and host tools

Documented APIs and command-line utilities for integrating with your own systems and test setups.

Security

Per-device identities, mutual TLS to AWS IoT Core and least-privilege access throughout the backend.

Open source

The platform is open source, so the implementation can be reviewed, extended and self-hosted.

Voice assistant integrations

Devices connected to an ESP RainMaker Neo deployment can be linked to voice assistants, so users control them by voice alongside the phone app. Account linking uses OAuth 2.0 against the deployment's own authorization endpoint, and the user grants access explicitly during linking.

Google Home

Link an ESP RainMaker Neo account to the Google Home app to discover devices and control them with the Google Assistant.

Amazon Alexa

Link an ESP RainMaker Neo account to the Alexa app to discover devices and control them with Alexa.
